The photo that Susan Wakefield took at Bognor Hill in the South Downs in England reminded me of my childhood.
At first, it was the unique colors of the landscape that fascinated me: the intense blue of the sky, the warm ochre and rust tones of the fields, and the bright path winding through the landscape.
But as I painted, the landscape increasingly became a memory. For me, the English landscape is closely linked to my childhood—to paths, fields, hedgerows, and that special light.
That is why the painting does not attempt to photographically reproduce a specific place. Rather, it is a memory of a place and a time.
