This painting is part of my series ‘Happy and grateful walking in the moor'.
I found my inspiration in the moor. There I photographed this special, naturally grown birch trunk, which rises from the ground in an unusual twist, as a model for this painting. Its shape immediately fascinated me – powerful, idiosyncratic and at the same time firmly rooted.
When painting, it was important to me to bring out the structure of the bark and the interplay of moss, wood and autumn leaves. The twisted movement of the trunk contrasts with the calm, misty forest landscape in the background.
For me, this tree symbolises both steadfastness and adaptability. In the moor, shapes emerge that do not grow straight, but find their own way. For me, this is precisely where I find a sense of happiness and gratitude – in the power of being rooted and yet growing individually.
